Saint Raphael-Frejus, France โ Boxer Tommy Fury followed in Team Ramsayโs London T100 footsteps by taking on the T100 this weekend at the French Riviera T100 Triathlon weekend in Saint Raphael and Frejus on the Esterel Cote DโAzur.ย
He battled in the Mediterranean sea to complete the swim and then the bike course, before embracing the 18km run in hot weather.
โThe T100 was amazing, honestly, I felt like towards the end it was like I was just in my own world. When you get like 8 miles into a run, 9 miles into a run, you’re just on a different planet, you know, especially after hours of cycling and you know, for me, well over an hour and a bit in the water. So it’s unbelievable that the human body can do marvellous things when you put your mind to it.โย
Asked what was going through his head, Fury said: โJust get it done, you know, forget about everybody else. I’m not in competition with anybody else. This isn’t my sport. I’m a fighter. I’m coming here just to compete against myself, so that’s all it was to do.โ
Due to the road closure permits in France, unfortunately Tommy and some other athletes in the 100km amateur race were unable to complete the bike course before the cut off time. However, given the T100 philosophy to grow the sport and encourage new athletes, it wanted to give them as full an experience as possible. So they were all given the opportunity to do the 18km run and cross the finish line. Although these times were not counted in the official results.ย
Compared with his sport of boxing, he said: โItโs different, itโs so much different, you know, in boxing, you donโt know what to prepare for, so youโve got the element of your opponent coming in and you donโt know what heโs gonna do. Whereas this, you know full well youโve got to do it. So thatโs even more taxing because you know exactly how far youโve got to do in each thing. And thereโs nobody out there, thereโs no brakes either. So I admire anyone who does them.โ
Asked what was special and his message to anyone thinking about doing a triathlon, he said: โDo you know what the best thing about the courses that my missus and my baby [Molly-Mae Hague and Bambi] was here. I had no idea they was going to be here. It was the best thing I could have wished for while I was on that course, so Iโm happy theyโre out here and it was for them.โ
โDefinitely do it. Do not shy away, get it done because I can tell you now, the feeling that Iโm gonna have in about 15 minutes once Iโve came round a little bit, Iโm gonna feel on top of the world. So everybody get yourself up, get training and get in.โ
Why did he do it?
โBecause itโs something new,โ said Fury. โI prepare and train to get ready for fights, and jumping in the water, getting on the bike is completely uncharted territory for me. I wanted to prove whatever I put my mind to, I can do.โ
Fury is no stranger to triathlons having done the Ironman 70.3 triathlon in June 2023 when he finished in 6 hours 27 minutes, but he has recently been focused on the filming for his new BBC documentary called Tommy: The Good. The Bad. The Fury.
โIโd been filming in the days leading up so my training has been limited โ we all have other life commitments that come up and could deter us, but I made this commitment to myself and I was here to get it done.โ
