Doha, Qatar: Doha came alive with more than 2,000 amateur triathletes from 82 countries swimming, biking and running around the stunning streets of Lusail as the Qatar T100 Triathlon World Championship Final burst into life yesterday.ย

The participantsโ€™ infectious energy and excitement lit up the third day of the inaugural Qatar T100 Triathlon World Championship Final as the amateurs took centre stage.ย

This followed the phenomenal T100 professional races yesterday which saw Great Britainโ€™s Kate Waugh win the final race and the womenโ€™s T100 Race To Qatar season-long crown and New Zealandโ€™s Hayden Wilde complete the same success on the menโ€™s side.ย

This weekโ€™s event is a cornerstone of the wider agreement between the PTO, Visit Qatar, World Triathlon and the Qatar Triathlon Federation that will see Qatar host the T100 Triathlon World Championship Final from 2025 through 2029.ย

The first T100 Age Group World Championships saw more than 250 qualified athletes from 45 different countries taking part across thirteen age groups: Eligible age-groups are: 18-19; 20-24; 25-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70-74; and 75-79.

โ€œOne of the unique aspects of T100 is the opportunity for professionals and Age Groupers to compete on the same courses, in the same iconic cities, and on the same weekends,โ€ said PTO CEO Sam Renouf. โ€˜The T100 wants to be the F1 of long distance triathlon โ€“ with the greatest athletes competing consistently in a season-long competition in iconic locations. However, unlike in F1 and other pro sports, triathlon provides the opportunity for amateurs to challenge themselves with the same experience as the top professionals in the world.โ€

โ€œAs part of our partnership with World Triathlon, it was always the strategy to give aspiring Age Groupers and amateur athletes the chance to compete for their T100 World Championship glory alongside the professionals. Today has been a great demonstration of why we wanted to do it. The performances and atmosphere have been off the charts.โ€

On Wednesday 10 December, Lusail saw 3,087 participants take part in a 5km and 1km run, followed by an eye-catching drone show. In addition to the 256 Age Groupers competing in the T100 Age Grouper World Championships, another 1,830 took part in: a Youth Sprint Distance Triathlon; an Open 100km triathlon (2km swim, 80km bike, 18km run); and a Sprint distance triathlon (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run). Meaning the three-day event saw 5,171 amateurs involved.ย

The T100 Age Group World Championships where introduced by the PTO across standard triathlon age brackets to give amateur athletes the opportunity to race for the glory of being crowned a T100 Age Group World Champion.ย
